Joanna Gamper Cuthbert is a former dancer, cheer athlete, head coach, programme owner and was the national team manager for Team England Adaptive Abilities Cheer (ICU World Cheerleading Championships 2016 and 2017). She currently chairs the board at SportCheer England; the National Governing Body for the sport of Cheerleading and Performance Cheer in England.

Joanna is also a safeguarding educator, offering education and training for cheerleading and dance through her consultancy Squad Safe. She is also the Head of Engagement for Impact Dance; a hip hop dance theatre company based in central London.

With a deep passion for empowering young people, Joanna focuses on developing leadership skills, creating transformative experiences in cheerleading and dance, and using the power of sport to inspire change and unlock potential.

Joanna has written 'Squad Safe', to help everyone in cheer have the most fulfilling experience and achieve their best.

Whilst cheer was the springboard for this book, many of the recommedations apply to safeguarding in all sports making this discussion relevant to all athletes (grassroot and elite), parents and caregivers, coaches and teachers.

Since the launch of 'Squad Safe' in February 2025, people involved in sport are already examining their approach to safeguarding and well being, aiming for the highest standards to ensure that everyone involved is safe and protected on the mat and beyond.

At this event, sponsored by WePlay, Caroline from We are Girls in Sport and Joanna will discuss the book and there'll also be the opportunity to ask questions.

We recommend reading the book first to take advantage of asking the author questions.
